Discovering the wonder of Art begins in the very first days of Reception class, here at Laxton Junior School.
Our Head of Art, Mrs Sarah Ashby, teaches every pupil in the school and guides them through seven years of artistic development, empowering them to become creative, confident young artists.
Using a wide range of materials, techniques, and artistic genres, pupils enjoy weekly access to our purpose‑built art studio, fully equipped for children to create using a variety of media. They also benefit from regular visits to the Yarrow Gallery for workshops with visiting artists and Oundle School Art teachers. Additional excursions include trips to the Burghley House Sculpture Garden, Oundle School’s sculpture studios, and further afield to the Tate Gallery.
Beyond timetabled lessons, Laxton Junior School children have the opportunity to continue their creativity in after‑school clubs such as clay modelling or origami. Our grounds also feature several outdoor drawing boards, providing space for imaginative doodling and keeping those creative juices flowing throughout the day.
Collaborative whole‑school projects have included willow‑weaving our iconic camel, which stands proudly in our Woodland Garden, as well as creating our impressive 20‑foot papier‑mâché giraffe—a much‑loved feature of our school community.
“Art is the most intense mode of individualism that the world has known.” – Oscar Wilde
