'Oundle's reputation as a centre of excellence in the field of education is unquestionable…'

At Laxton Junior, the curriculum is based upon National Curriculum guidelines, which allows us to keep abreast of modern educational trends, whilst still benefiting from a more formal and traditional approach. The children experience a wide variety of timetabled lessons appropriate to their age. Specialist teaching is a strength, although we also acknowledge the need for younger children to spend the majority of their time with their individual Form Teacher. As pupils progress through the school, more time is spent with specialist teachers giving opportunities to learn and thrive under a variety of teaching and learning styles.

Young learners at Laxton Junior benefit from the ancient saying:

What I hear … I forget,
What I see … I remember,
What I do … I understand.

Children learn in a variety of ways and it is most important that individuals are given the opportunity to experience variety in their education. Special educational needs are supported throughout the school, whether they are the needs of the disadvantaged or gifted learner.

A broad and well balanced curriculum should involve opportunities to explore: the humanities, foreign languages, art, drama and music, in addition to the core subjects of mathematics, literacy and science.

At Laxton Junior, music is a particular strength. The school has developed a nationally renowned string project which involves all Year 2 pupils learning either Violin or Cello, as part of their timetabled music lessons.

Sport and games are also a strength. A comprehensive fixture list enables our pupils to experience the excitement and camaraderie that are derived from competing as part of a team. Win or lose, the experience itself is considered to be the main point!

Senior School Destinations

Children move on from Laxton Junior School to a wide variety of senior schools, both boarding and day. Many of our pupils transfer to Laxton, the day house of Oundle School.
